SUMMARY:The Crossing: Picturing the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate 2026\, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, Michener Art Museum will introduce new perspectives on a related event that also occurred in 1776: the crossing of the Delaware River by George Washington and his troops on Christmas night to surprise Hessian soldiers stationed at Trenton\, New Jersey\, marking a major turning point in the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nThe German American artist Emanuel Leutze (1816-1868) exhibited his vision of this scene in New York in 1851\, and it was eventually published as a popular engraving and donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Leutze’s heroic celebration of Washington’s leadership and military might\, painted nearly a century after the depicted event occurred\, became an iconic example of American history painting. Modern and contemporary artists have provided new perspectives on this larger-than-life-size work\, reexamining the conditions and accounts of the 1776 crossing and considering the peoples\, perspectives\, and histories that are not represented within Leutze’s composition.     \n\n\n\nThe Crossing: Picturing the American Revolution will feature works by local\, national\, and international artists Edward Hicks\, William Francis Taylor\, Charles W. Hargens\, Robert Beck\, vanessa german\, Ai Weiwei\, and others that offer new conceptions of this historic event and expand our understanding of history painting. DESCRIPTION:Witness the Crossing that saved the Revolution…Each December\, thousands of visitors gather along the banks of the Delaware River to witness the reenactment of General George Washington’s daring crossing on Christmas Night 1776. This commemorative event includes hundreds of reenactors participating in presentations of 18th-century military life\, including fife and drum music\, artillery and musket drills\, and gathering for inspection before rowing replica Durham boats across the river to New Jersey. \n\n\n\nTIME: 10 AM to 3 PM (actual crossing at 1 PM)COST: $10 for adults\, $6 for children ages 5-11\, free for children younger than 5. Family rate (2 adults and 2 children under 18) is $30.DETAILS: In addition to the Crossing reenactment\, the Historic Village will feature a full day of activities and demonstrations that highlight 18th-century civilian and military life\, offering fun and learning for the whole family. SUMMARY:74th Annual Christmas Day Crossing Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:Each December\, thousands of people gather on the banks of the Delaware River to watch the reenactment of George Washington’s daring 1776 Christmas night river crossing. During the event\, several hundred reenactors in Continental military dress listen to an inspiring speech by General Washington and then row across the river in replica Durham boats. This year marks the 250th Anniversary of the Crossing which took place on Christmas Night 1776. \n\n\n\nOn Friday\, December 25th\, celebrate the 74th annual Christmas Day Crossing Reenactment from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM (actual crossing at 1:00 PM). Arrival by 11:30 AM is recommended to secure a good view. Admission is free\, thanks to proceeds from the First Crossing and contributions from many generous donors. \n\n\n\nRiver Crossings are contingent upon safe weather conditions for participants. However\, even if conditions do not allow for crossing\, guests can still participate in historic ceremonies\, speeches\, and commemorative colonial-era activities. \n\n\n\nWashington Crossing Historic Park is located at the intersection of Routes 532 and 32 (River Road) in Washington Crossing\, Pennsylvania.
