Holidays at Fonthill Castle

Built between 1908 and 1912, Fonthill Castle served as Henry Chapman Mercer’s eclectic concrete home and a showcase for his world-renowned Arts and Crafts tilework. Operated today by the Bucks County Historical Society, the castle remains a striking example of early reinforced-concrete architecture filled with Mercer’s handcrafted designs.

During the holidays, Fonthill Castle transforms into a glowing seasonal retreat, with themed trees and richly decorated rooms highlighting Mercer’s artistic legacy. Visitors can choose from guided daytime tours, candlelit evening tours, or self-paced meander days that illuminate the castle’s festive charm.

Festival of Trees at Pearl S. Buck House

Pearl S. Buck International preserves the 1825 farmhouse of Nobel and Pulitzer Prize–winning author Pearl S. Buck, a National Historic Landmark and museum that reflects her legacy of humanitarianism, intercultural understanding, and advocacy for children and women. Guests who visit the estate can explore her writing desk, personal collection, gardens, and the 68-acre grounds where she lived for more than 30 years.

Each year during the Festival of Trees, the rooms of the Pearl S. Buck House come alive with glowing holiday decorations, beautiful Christmas trees and vignettes created by local artists, decorators, and community groups. Visitors also have the chance to vote for their favorite display, enjoy Candlelight Tours, and experience the holiday season through the lens of Pearl S. Buck’s enduring legacy.

ELF: The Musical at the Bucks County Playhouse

Spend an evening at the historic Bucks County Playhouse, an iconic riverside theater with roots dating back to an 18th-century grist mill. Opened in 1939 after local artists saved the former New Hope Mills from demolition, it has hosted generations of legendary performers.

This holiday season, see Elf: The Musical, directed by Emmy Award® winner John Tartaglia, complete with Broadway-caliber talent, whimsical staging, and seasonal cheer. Grundy Museum’s Victorian Holiday House

Rooted in the story of the influential Grundy family, their 1885 Queen Anne–style mansion reflects the height of Victorian innovation, taste, and prominence in Bristol. Once home to industrialist and U.S. Senator Joseph Grundy and his sister Margaret, the residence preserves the legacy of a family deeply woven into the political, cultural, and economic life of the region.

Step into the Gilded Age at the Grundy Museum, where the Victorian Holiday House tradition transforms the mansion into a winter wonderland filled with themed displays like “Toys & Tinsel.” Richly decorated rooms, period ornaments, and curated vignettes offer an atmospheric glimpse into holiday traditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mercer Museum Holiday Open House

Founded by archaeologist and collector Henry Chapman Mercer, the Mercer Museum preserves more than 17,000 pre-Industrial tools and rotating exhibitions within its 1890s castle-like structure. As a Smithsonian affiliate and leading cultural destination, the museum offers one of the nation’s most comprehensive views of early American craftsmanship and material culture.

The annual Holiday Open House brings the museum to life with live music, family crafts, seasonal treats, and visits with Santa in the historic Log House. Guests can explore the galleries after hours while enjoying festive performances from local musicians and school ensembles.

America’s Oldest Tree Lighting Ceremony

Perkasie’s roots stretch back to the early 18th century, when the “Manor of Perkasie” was laid out in 1708 as part of William Penn’s land holdings and later developed into a thriving railroad town by the late 19th century. From its colonial-era homesteads and Revolutionary War ties to its rapid growth fueled by commerce, transportation, and industry, Perkasie evolved into a vibrant community with deep historic character.

Since 1909, Perkasie has hosted what is recognized as America’s oldest community tree lighting ceremony, a tradition so significant it was entered into the Congressional Record in 2015. Each year, the historic town center comes alive with holiday music, festive food, wagon rides, and family activities culminating in the 7:00 PM arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus on a Perkasie Electric Company truck to light the community Holiday tree.

St. Nicholas Day at the Erwin Stover House

The Erwin Stover House is a colonial brick residence with Victorian-era additions, set along the Delaware River in Tinicum Park and stewarded by Bucks County as part of two National Register properties within the County Parks System. Situated on 126 acres and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019, the house and barn connect visitors to Bucks County’s rich past through tours, trails, and year-round educational programs.

Experience a Victorian Christmas inside the beautifully decorated house, where families can enjoy St. Nicholas stories, period games, ornament crafts, and festive caroling. It’s a Wonderful Life at Newtown Theatre

Dating back to 1831, the Newtown Theatre began as Newtown Hall, a community gathering space and performance venue that later became America’s oldest continuously operating movie theater after showing its first film in 1906. Over nearly two centuries, the theater has evolved through major renovations and expanded programming, remaining a beloved cultural hub at the heart of Newtown Borough with convenient nearby parking.

Celebrate the season by watching an American Classic inside this historic 250-seat theater, where 19th-century charm meets modern comfort and accessibility. With screenings on December 12 and 14, It’s a Wonderful Life tells the timeless story of George Bailey, which feels even more heartfelt when experienced in a venue that has been bringing people together for generations.

Washington Crossing Historic Park’s Annual Crossing Reenactments

Celebrate one of America’s most iconic Revolutionary moments at the site of Washington’s daring 1776 river crossing. The First Crossing is on December 14 from 10 AM–3 PM, which includes a full historic village with 18th-century demonstrations, narration and book signings by historian Tom Hand, food vendors, and more. Children under 5 are free, tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for youth or a $25 family rate.

The 73rd Annual Christmas Crossing is on December 25 from 12 PM–3 PM. Admission is free, thanks to proceeds from the First Crossing and donations. Both crossings are dependent on river conditions, but ceremonies will occur regardless. While you’re there, explore the 500-acre historic park, gallery exhibits, Thompson-Neely House & Farmstead and Grist Mill, soldiers’ graves, and Visitor Center.

New Hope Revolutionary Pub Crawl

Founded in 2016 during the Lambertville–New Hope Winter Festival, Revolutionary Crawls & Events began as a creative way to support local businesses by blending professional reenactors with guided pub-and-town tours. Since then, it has grown into a full performance-based historical experience telling Revolutionary-era stories through character-driven engagements.

This festive Pub Crawl leads guests through historic taverns in neighboring Delaware River Towns, where figures like George Washington, Ben Franklin, Abigail Adams, and Benedict Arnold deliver lively reenactments at every stop.
